Description

Originally issued in 1976, The Royal Scam finds Steely Dan pushing their jazz-inflected rock toward harder edges, with knotty chord changes, studio precision, and lead guitar given unusual prominence. Tracks such as "Kid Charlemagne," "Don't Take Me Alive," and "Haitian Divorce" pair sardonic, character-driven lyrics with grooves that lean on Latin and reggae rhythms. The album emphasizes the band's tighter, guitar-forward approach compared to their smoother later work.
