Description

Takin' Off introduces Herbie Hancock as a leader, pairing his crisp, blues-inflected piano with a horn front line across six original compositions. "Watermelon Man" leans into a funky, soul-jazz groove, while "Driftin'" and "The Maze" run in a more straight-ahead hard bop direction. Recorded in 1962.
