Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique (Decca Pure Analog Series) LP

$54.98

Description

Since its first release, Sir Colin Davis’s exhilarating 1974 account of the Symphonie fantastique with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, has remained a prime recommendation.

Davis’s affinity with Berlioz is now the stuff of legend. His understanding of Berlioz’s unique compositional practices is amply demonstrated in this Concertgebouw recording. All the individual qualities of Berlioz’s orchestration are unapologetically realised by Davis’s supreme musicianship. He is a true champion of the French composer’s work, and this outstanding version rightly deserves the high praise it has received over the years.

For this release Rainer Maillard at Emil Berliner Studios has used the original, four-track quadraphonic master tape to make a new stereo mix sent directly to the cutter head. This preserves a pure analogue path throughout. The Philips engineers of the 1970s would similarly have mixed the four front and rear channels before cutting but this downmix would have resulted in a two-track stereo copy for mastering, whereas here the lacquer is cut directly from a ‘live’ mix into stereo from the four Quad channels.
