Description

Roots And Herbs captures the Jazz Messengers in hard bop mode, driven by Art Blakey's insistent drumming and a front line that trades crisp, angular themes for loose blowing space. Recorded in 1961 but held back until its release in 1970, the set draws on Wayne Shorter's writing, giving the material a knottier, more searching quality than the group's bluesier sides.
