Shut Up ’n Play Yer Guitar by Frank Zappa is an instrumental collection focused almost entirely on Zappa’s electric guitar solos, originally assembled from live performances recorded between 1977 and 1980. Issued during his early-1980s independent-label period, it reframes concert improvisations as standalone compositions rather than excerpts from longer songs. “Treacherous Cretins” and “Heavy Duty Judy” show the sharper, rhythm-section-driven side of the set, while “Pink Napkins” moves with a slower, more lyrical sense of phrasing. “Canard du jour,” recorded with Jean-Luc Ponty, closes the collection on a more chamber-like note. Available as a 2-disc CD set.
