Description

Freak Out! by The Mothers of Invention is the group’s 1966 debut album and the first major statement from Frank Zappa as a bandleader, composer, and satirist. Produced by Tom Wilson for Verve, it arrived as an unusually ambitious double album for a new rock act, folding doo-wop, garage rock, orchestral fragments, and social commentary into one unruly framework. “Hungry Freaks, Daddy” opens with a sharp countercultural address, while “Who Are the Brain Police?” turns paranoia and tape manipulation into one of the album’s defining moments. “Trouble Every Day” gives the record its most direct topical edge, written in response to the 1965 Watts unrest. Available on CD.
