Description

This new 10-CD boxset, compiled with unparalleled care by Graham Johnson, her accompanist of five decades, offers the perfect overview of her vast song legacy. Albums devoted to Richard Strauss, Schubert, Schumann and Wolf respectively are presented alongside a live Wigmore Hall recital, three albums exploring French mélodies, one of English song and one presenting ‘Flott’ (as she became affectionately known) at the start of her recital career with other members of The Songmakers’ Almanac. Alongside opera, the admiration and love stemmed from song and the connection audiences enjoyed with her in recital where she combined her warm, rich tone with a gift for language, a sense of humour and elegant grace. The French welcomed her as a Chevalier (Légion d’honneur) and Commandeur (L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) while both Oxford and the Sorbonne gave her honorary doctorates. Collaborators include Peter Schreier, Ann Murray, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Stephen Varcoe & Susan Bickley.

‘Some singers are revered, others are loved and it is fair to say that Dame Felicity belongs in the second group. While she had the fine vocal technique and authority on stage that might have invited reverence, it is the warmth of her performances—‘humanity’ seems the right word—that one remembers above all’ (Gramophone)

A set of this stature requires outstanding presentation. Flott’s accompanist Graham Johnson, among the most prolific and possibly finest writers of his generation, has written fresh essays to each and every one of these albums, most of which are compiled anew from the Hyperion archives.

Complete sung texts are offered with English translation. For easiest utility, each album enjoys its own booklet and card wallet within the clamshell outer.

Grace, wit, and eloquence defined Dame Felicity Lott’s artistry. This memorial anthology, curated by long-time collaborator Graham Johnson, preserves a lifetime of inspired performances across the richest traditions of the song recital.
