Recorded on tour with The Innocent Criminals, Live From Mars is built as two distinct halves. The first is the full band in full flight, loose and funky, working through "Glory & Consequence," "Excuse Me Mr.," "Ground On Down," "Steal My Kisses" and "Burn One Down." The second strips everything back to Harper alone with his Weissenborn lap slide, where "Waiting On An Angel," "Walk Away" and "Forgiven" get room to breathe.

The covers are a large part of the album's reputation: a reverent reading of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing," Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" folded into "Faded," and material that shows how wide Harper's frame of reference runs. Twenty-five tracks in all.

This 4LP edition has long been regarded as the record that best captures what Harper does on stage.
