Description

Certain kinds of music give us answers. Others dare to leave questions open.” With these words, Andrè Schuen describes the songs of Gustav Mahler. Ever since his first encounter with Songs of a Wayfarer more than ten years ago, they have accompanied him on his artistic journey – works that reveal new facets of the human condition with every performance.
Now, Andrè Schuen and Daniel Heide present their first recording devoted to Mahler. The album brings together Songs of a Wayfarer, the Rückert-Lieder, the Kindertotenlieder, and Urlicht – works in which Mahler gives deeply moving expression to love and loss, memory, consolation, and the search for meaning. Over many years, the two artists have continued to explore this music in concert, allowing their interpretation to evolve naturally over time.
The studio recording was made in the Markus Sittikus Hall in Hohenems, Austria, one of the venues of the internationally renowned Schubertiade Festival. It is the result of an artistic dialogue that has evolved over many years – between singer and pianist, and with the richly layered world of Mahler’s songs.
