John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things: Coltrane at Newport was released in 2007 on Impulse! Records, compiling performances from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1963 and 1965. Drawn from two different ensembles, the album documents a period of transition as Coltrane moved from modal frameworks toward a more open, free-form approach.

The 1963 performance of “My Favorite Things” reflects the hypnotic modal style of his earlier quartet, while “Impressions” pushes into longer, more exploratory territory. From the later set, “One Down, One Up” captures the heightened intensity of his mid-’60s group, contrasted by the more direct reading of “I Want to Talk About You.” This edition is presented on CD.
